HACKENSACK – Jillian DiGiacinto took home the Bergen Meet of Champions top girls track award and she did it in record fashion.
The Hasbrouck Heights senior ran a 1:01.58 in the girls intermediate hurdles Friday at Hackensack’s Tom Dellatorre Field, snapping the record of 1:01.97, set by Ridgewood’s Cristina Law in 2007.
DiGiacinto thought she got an edge with her lane assignment.“I like running in Lane 2 because then you see everyone in the race except one,” DiGiacinto said. “I just want to get off to a good start and then build a bigger lead with each hurdle.”
She was the first to clear a hurdle and opened up a lead on the backstretch.
“From the beginning of the race it was really close, so I wanted to push to break it open at the 200 mark,” DiGiacinto said.
She began to labor near the end of the race, but was not out of gas.
“Sometimes she can look like she’s struggling, but that’s just how she runs, putting it all out at the end,” said coach Rob Brady. Ramsey’s Kelsey Larkin narrowed the gap to finish within a second of DiGiacinto, but there was never a doubt of the final result.
