Both Becton and Lyndhurst saw their state playoff chances go up into the smoke during the last couple of weeks. One of the few enticements for the two schools was winning the annual battle between them.
The host Wildcats brought back the Hall of Fame trophy to the East Rutherford school with a 28-6 win over the Golden Bears on Friday night.
The Hall of Fame dates back to the 1930s when the football rivalry started. There were several decades where the two schools did not play at least annually.
The game was brought back in the 1990s as a Thanksgiving Day game between the two schools and they vowed to make sure the game continues despite the abandonment of the Thanksgiving Day game and a new league, the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference.
On Friday, it was pretty much all Becton in the 28-6 victory at Riggin Field against the Golden Bears. It was the Wildcats third win in the last four years in the contest against Lyndhurst.
Last year, Lyndhurst defeated Becton, 21-7, as the Golden Bears were en route to the state playoffs.
The Wildcats recalled the 2011 loss to the Golden Bears. “We just remembered last year when they were celebrating in the middle of the field and holding up the trophy,” said Becton quarterback Scott Marafelias.
With the win, the Wildcats raised its record to 5-4 while Lyndhurst dropped to 4-5.
“It was a really good win,” said Becton quarterback Scott Marafelias. “We want to finish the season at 6-4.”
Marafelias put the icing on the cake in the forth quarter as he scrambled 13 yards for the touchdown that finished the scoring. In addition, Becton running back Matt Williams ran for a pair of touchdowns while Daaon Higgins added another rushing touchdown for the Wildcats.
