Coach: Nick Calandrino, fourth season

Last year’s record: 8-2, lost in the first round of the North 1, Group 1 playoffs

Last year’s final ranking: 18

Rearview Mirror: Eight wins was the most for any Cavos team since 2010, but the loss to sixth-seeded Pompton Lakes on a brutally cold night still stings. Emerson found itself a bit outsized in that contest up front. That didn’t mar an outstanding year, however. The Cavos discovered their identity, which is a strong running game led by Ryan Shaw and a stiff, opportunistic defense.

Looking ahead: Well, we just mentioned Shaw, right? He’s going to be one of North Jersey’s top running backs this year, and Calandrino also thinks he’s going to make a bigger impact defensively from his linebacker spot. Quarterback Pete Durocher threw for over 900 yard and run for 500 more. He’s a three-sport athlete and leader. The offensive line won’t be big (again) but it will be experienced. Calandrino isn’t worried about having guys play on both sides, because he knows they can handle it.

Bold Prediction: The NJIC shuffled its divisions some and the Patriot Division could ride on the game between St. Mary and Emerson. They meet in Week 1. The winner of that game will likely win the division.
