Coach: Mike Coyne, first season

Last year’s record: 4-4

Rearview Mirror: The Gaels replaced legendary coach Mike Sheridan with Coyne, a St. Mary alum who constantly refers to the school as his “home.” Coyne was previously the head coach at Palisades Park/Leonia. Sheridan did not leave the cupboard bare, as the Gaels gained some good experience last season and bring back much of its starting line-up.

Looking ahead: Coyne is proud of the blue-collar make-up of his squad. The Gaels will revolve around senior tailback Shawan Gresham, a strong, powerful runner who has received interest from a handful of colleges, including Coastal Carolina and New Hampshire. Coyne says he’s at another level from last year. He’ll run behind a line that includes 6-foot-4, 285 pound tackle Giovanni Potenta. Josh Marron is also big threat at tight end and a good defensive end. Coyne has brought enthusiasm and a fresh approach to the Gaels. One highlight of the schedule will be the Gaels first game out of state in over 40 years when they play Poly Prep in New York.

Bold prediction: Gresham will surpass 1,000 yards and the Gaels will get back to the Non-Public Group 2 playoffs.
