The St. Mary, Becton and Rutherford football teams bolstered their chances of making the state playoffs, nearly clinching a shot at a state title.


St. Mary (7-0) had already qualified in the Non-Public Group 1, but clinched at least a share of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC) Patriot division title with the 40-14 win at Bogota on Saturday.


Rutherford (5-2) maintained its hold on a state playoff berth with a 35-28 victory at Glen Rock on Saturday.


Becton (4-3) added points to its state playoff bid with a 48-0 win at Wood-Ridge on Friday night.


Lyndhurst (4-3) won its third game in a row, this time, 35-20, at Garfield on Friday, but appear to be looking outside in with the playoffs.


And Queen of Peace (2-5) was officially eliminated from the state playoffs after falling 45-22 to Saddle Brook on Friday night.


North Arlington (1-5) just did not have enough against Palisades Park, 34-6, on Friday night on the road.
