Saddle Brook senior launched himself into the Bergen County and state record book Saturday after a personal-best throw of 187 feet, eight inches in the discus.

That throw set a new North 1, Group 1 sectional record and also ranks fourth all-time in Bergen County, 18 inches behind the record holder, Fair Lawn’s Mike Buncic, a two-time Olympian.

Gutierrez said the key to his big throw was a word more associated with track events: speed.

“My coach has been saying my technique and my form have been good, everything but speed,” he said. “From the very start, I need to snap my right leg to get my body’s whole momentum going. It took my four years to master it, but I’m still getting better at it and still working.”

Gutierrez’s also won the sectional shot put title, the second year in a row he’s won those two events.
