Sometimes, clichés really do say it all.
Like when Emerson coach Chris Sommerhalter gathers his players together for a final pep talk before today’s North 1, Group 1 tournament opener against Wallington at Doc Sweeney Field. The Cavos are an experienced bunch with more than enough players back from last season’s state title team who know the score inside and out.
You’ve got to say something as a coach, right? But what can you tell these guys if not the obvious?
“I know,” Sommerhalter said with a little chuckle. “All the clichés come out at this time of year. But it’s true. You have to take it one game at a time, especially when it’s one and done.”
And, so the top-seeded Cavos (17-8) are ready to take it one game at a time. They’re not looking too far ahead, et cetera, et cetera.
The thing is, three weeks from now, if all breaks right, all these pre-tournament clichés will be looked at as veritable pearls of wisdom. It is hard to repeat, and the Cavos are going into this tournament with a big, shiny target on their backs.
