NORTH ARLINGTON — Kevin Cerqueira, Edgar Caranza and their North Arlington teammates gave their program, their school, their town, something to remember them by:

The Vikings’ first Bergen Jamboree boys basketball tournament victory in 31 years.

“We’re always going to be remembered now,” Cerqueira said Friday, referring to last weekend’s opening-round, 65-54 upset of next-door neighbor Queen of Peace.

The 21st-seeded Vikings’ upset of No. 12 Queen of Peace earns them a second-round matchup against the heavily favored defending champion, No. 5 Bergen Catholic, on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Tenafly.

This Brunch Battle is the first of four games slated for Super Bowl Sunday. Today, there is a quartet of games at Northern Highlands, starting at 11 a.m. with No. 11 St. Mary versus No. 6 Ramsey.

North Arlington (15-4) has reached the Jamboree for the second time in three seasons under coach Rich Corsetto thanks to six seniors and a promising sophomore center.

“This is one of the hardest-working groups of kids that I’ve ever had,” said Corsetto, who in 36 seasons as a high school and college coach has 718 total wins. “Not a lot of talent, but they bust their tails every day. They work as hard in practice as they do in games, and to me that says a lot, and that’s why they’ve been successful this year.”
