SECAUCUS – Almost incredibly, Dylan Vasquez and Gabriel Chavez hadn’t seen each other in almost 10 years, since their days of playing soccer with Secaucus Recreation as 5-year-olds, before Chavez showed up at the Patriots’ first practice in August.

They both reside in Secaucus, but had attended different schools. Chavez transferred to Secaucus after spending his freshman year at St. Peter’s Prep.

However, if you watch them play together for the Patriots, you would swear they were the best of friends and kicking the ball to each other every day. Their chemistry on the field is uncanny.

“He’s the first one I look to as soon as I get the ball,” said junior forward Vasquez, who had a goal and three assists in the Patriots’ 6-4 win over Lyndhurst on Monday at quaint Shetik Field. “As soon as I get the ball, I know where Gabe is going to be.”

“We’ve been connecting more lately,” said sophomore forward Chavez, who had three goals and two assists. “When I see Dylan fight, it makes me fight, too.”

The Golden Bears lost for the first time after five wins and a tie. Secaucus improved to 6-2.
