Giana DiLascio thought back to her brain surgery.

The pain, the fear, the tears – it all came flooding back after she crossed the finish line, turned, and discovered there wasn’t another runner in sight.

The Hasbrouck Heights junior won the NJIC Meadowlands Division cross-country race Oct. 10 in 21:22, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

The Record Female of the Week’s journey has been as winding as the path across Garret Mountain in Woodland Park. Four years ago, doctors drilled a hole in her skull to drain fluid that couldn’t pass through the ventricles in her brain. The condition, known as hydrocephalus, caused her brain to swell.
