RUTHERFORD — Brendan Coffey led the way for Cresskill in a game that did not have postseason implications — but did possess plenty of spirited play, nonetheless.

A senior tailback and co-captain, Coffey scored three touchdowns and rushed for 151 yards on 13 carries to lead Cresskill past St. Mary, 50-28, in an NJIC interdivisional game at Tamblyn Field on Saturday.

“Overall, I’m happy with the result, our execution was good and Brendan ran very effectively and with purpose,” said Cresskill coach Kevin Quinn. “We made some big plays and St. Mary also battled us hard and gave a fine effort.”

With the game being the ninth of the season for both teams, it did not count in the compilation of power points for the playoffs that will begin next weekend.

Cresskill (6-3) is locked in as the No. 8 seed in North 1, Group 1 and will visit top-seeded Park Ridge (8-1), a team it defeated, 18-15, on Oct. 16, in the quarterfinals.

St. Mary (7-2) already has secured the No. 5 slot in Non-Public Group 2 and will travel to Caven Point in Jersey City to play fourth-seeded Hudson Catholic (8-1) in the first round.

For St. Mary, which previously had clinched the NJIC Patriot with a 6-0 divisional record, it was an inspired effort operating without its top-drawer senior tailback Derius Stone.
