CRESSKILL – When Cresskill handed the ball to running back Brendan Coffey, yards, first downs, and touchdowns happened.

The senior captain ran for 297 yards and five touchdowns on 36 carries to lead the Cougars to a 55-20 victory over North Arlington on Friday night in NJIC Meadowlands Division football.

“He is a great, tough runner,” Cresskill coach Kevin Quinn said, “and the advantage he has is we have some good guys up front.”

Running almost exclusively between the tackles, Coffey scored on first-half runs of 2 and 6 yards to help Cresskill forge a 33-21 halftime lead, and he had second-half TD runs of 6, 10, and 50 yards.

Cresskill’s guards, junior Johnny Van Cleft and senior captain Nicky Funiciello, often paved the way for Coffey and the Cougars. Senior Ryan Nolan and junior center DJ Morrissey also got a huge push against the Vikings’ line.

“They pushed us off the ball,” North Arlington coach Anthony Marck said, “and we got pushed around, and we have to get back to work. That’s the bottom line. We have to get back to work.”
