The Bucknell-bound star became just the second girl in state history to repeat in the long and triple jumps when she dominated both events June 9 — and almost became the first North Jersey athlete to win three individual events in the same state Meet of Champions when she took second in the 100-meter dash.
She’s also the first boy or girl to repeat as the field honoree since the award started in 2002.
After her historic year in 2015 — three wins at the Passaic County championships and four each in Group 1 sectional and state competition before winning the long and triple jumps in surprising fashion — there was no letdown for Salisbury.
It’s just not in her DNA.
“After everything I did last year, I wanted the same this year and better,” said Salisbury, who added a fourth win in the Passaic meet and improved from fifth in the SMOC 100 while improving in each of her four events: the long jump, triple jump, 100 and 200. “I’m never content with the way I perform. I always want to go harder, farther, stronger and better.”
Hawthorne jumps coach Jayson La Vorne told her to write a set of goals before the season started, and Salisbury responded by printing 19 feet (long jump), 40 feet (triple jump) and 12 seconds flat (100).
