“Sister, oh, sister!”
“Sister” is a word often heard at Cresskill, where good-humored siblings Emily, Carley and Elley Wells are starters on the girls soccer team.
Rather than saying each other’s name, they often simply say, “Sister!” Or, as Emily said at a recent practice, “Sister, oh, sister!”
“It was always a joke,” she said. “It started happening at the beginning of the season, in practice, and then carried over into the games.”
“Sometimes you’re in the game, and you’re not thinking, and it slips out,” Carley said, “and I find it incredibly amusing that we do that.”
Cresskill (11-6) has found success behind these sisters, who are different ages and play different roles. Emily, 18, is a senior and defensive midfielder. Carley, 16, is a junior sweeper. And Elley, 14, is a freshman midfielder.
Three siblings of different ages playing on the same high school team is rare.
“It’s been a ton of fun coaching them,” said Cougars coach Sean Liddy. “They’re the heart and soul of this team. Outside of the captains, the team goes where they go. They’re all in different spots on the field, so there’s no getting around them.
