Eastern Christian became the first lower seed to win at the Passaic County girls volleyball tournament.


The No. 9 Eagles defeated No. 8 Mary Help, 25-9, 25-22, in Wednesday’s first round in North Haledon to avenge a regular-season loss to their NJIC Colonial Division rival.


Senior Michelle Van Dyke had nine kills and sophomore Jayna Van Buiten 20 assists as Eastern Christian (5-9) snapped a four-game losing streak.


Senior Sarah Bruinooge added 15 digs and the Eagles will face top-seeded and defending champion DePaul in the quarterfinals.


HAWTHORNE 25, 25, PASSAIC 16, 16 (at Hawthorne): Senior Renee Buchanan had 20 digs and No. 5 Hawthorne (10-5) stretched its winning streak to five.


Junior Allison Jewett had 10 kills and junior Hannah Dougan 16 assists for the Bears, while Yvette Rivera and Khadija Malloy each had four kills for No. 12 Passaic.


WAYNE VALLEY 25, 25, KENNEDY 15, 7: (at Wayne): Senior Nikki Stemmler served a dozen points as the No. 3 Indians (7-5) won their seventh consecutive match against a county foe.


Senior Niki Carillo had five kills and a block, junior Courtney Kells and junior Michelle Ziegler combined for 11 assists, and senior Cassidy Markowski had eight digs and seven serves points for the Indians.
