Record File photo: Glen Rock’s Matt Schlett will see action on both sides of the ball this season.
Matt Schlett really wants to play at MetLife Stadium again.
That is where the 5-foot-11, 180-pound quarterback led Glen Rock last season. Schlett was dominant, throwing for 1,525 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for another 762 yards and 20 scores. The Panthers shocked the opposition time after time before reaching the North 1, Group 2 final in East Rutherford. Schlett said playing there was an incredible experience.
“Going to MetLife – that was everybody’s dream,” the rising senior said.
The dream, however, was not picture perfect. The Panthers’ season came to an end in the state final, as Mahwah ran away with a 38-13 win. Glen Rock’s two touchdowns – one passing and one rushing – came courtesy of Schlett.
Now Schlett wants to win the big game.
“Only [winning at] MetLife,” he said when asked how he wants the season to end.
Glen Rock head coach Jim Kurz appreciates the competitive sentiment, but said his team has a ways to go before talking about such aspirations.
“[MetLife] didn’t come easy, so any talk of that right now – and Matt should know how hard it was to get there – is not even in my mind right now,” Kurz said.
Schlett is willing to do whatever it takes to push the Panthers to the next level, though. That includes playing defense. He will spend time as a linebacker this coming season, the first time he has played on the other side of the ball since his freshman year.
