Emerson HS

EMERSON – Jenna Cooper was cruising. The Emerson pitcher had retired nine of the previous 11 Hawthorne batters she faced. She just needed three more outs.

Then lightning and heavy rain arrived Monday.

The game was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and resumed from the same spot Tuesday.

Cooper approached the final inning like any other outing.

“I had to warm up the same way and I had to just come back in like it was a fresh game,” Cooper said.

After a groundout ended the bottom of the sixth, Cooper pitched a scoreless seventh as eighth-seeded Emerson defeated No. 9 Hawthorne, 10-4, in a North 1, Group 1 first-round softball game.

The Cavos, who won their first opening-round state game in six years, will play top-seeded Saddle Brook in today’s second-round matchup.
