GARFIELD – The usual suspects had their expected success Saturday for Garfield. It was the unusual suspects that drew much of the attention, though, and helped power the Boilermakers to a trio of victories in a quadrangular match against visiting Glen Rock, Fair Lawn and Hawthorne.

Bryan Vargas, a 145-pound freshman, was perhaps the most interesting of Garfield’s multiple winners. Vargas was pinned by Glen Rock’s Kyle Fisher in his opening bout – Garfield won the match, 55-21 – but roared back to record victories in his final two bouts as the Boilermakers defeated Fair Lawn, 49-24, and Hawthorne, 65-6.

Vargas’ 9-2 decision against Fair Lawn’s Alex Eligur proved to be a highlight. Eligur was a District 6 finalist last spring and was Vargas’ toughest opponent to date. Yet, he rebounded from his earlier loss and handled the more experienced Eligur without even knowing who he was facing. Garfield coach Jim Dolci didn’t share Eligur’s accomplishments with his freshman prior to the bout.
