HAWTHORNE — There was no need for incentives this week for the Hawthorne High School football team.

The Hawthorne High School football team beat Rutherford, 33-14, last week.

The Bears were still stinging from a 32-26 overtime loss to Palisades Park/Leonia that stunned Hawthorne in the season opener at home.

The Bears one-two punch of running back Dwayne Miele and quarterback Tommy Walls started early and would not be stopped by the Rutherford defense.

Hawthorne took a 14-0 lead at halftime and pulled away in the second half en route to a 33-14 victory over Rutherford in a North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC) Colonial division battle.

Miele was over the century mark in rushing yards at halftime and finished with 209 for the night along with three touchdowns. Walls added 85 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns.

From the opening kickoff against Rutherford, Hawthorne was on fire.

“We knew what we had to do,” said Walls, who took over the full-time job this season for graduated senior signal caller Ryan Hollis.

Both Miele and Walls gave a huge amount of credit to the Bears offensive line led by Chris Forsythe, Ethan Ramos, Billy Brown and Luke Burkart.

“Our line is the reason why we won,” said Miele. “Our line is great and really picked us up.”

On a night where everything was working for Hawthorne it kept the Bulldogs top weapons in check in quarterback Jim Hadrava and running back Pat Landrigan. Landrigan really only had one big play, a 67-yard sprint down the home sideline that went for a touchdown.
