The Lyndhurst boys’ soccer team is looking to replicate last season’s success in the second half.

The Golden Bears went on a five-game winning streak late in the 2011 season. The five victories were most of the six-win total for all of last season.

Lyndhurst already has four wins on the 2012 season, but made a 2-0 decision at New Milford last Thursday to drop to 4-4 on the season. The Golden Bears offense just could not solve Green Knights’ goal keeper T.J. Zadroga.

The Golden Bears start the second half of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Liberty division schedule this week. “We’re hoping to change those losses into wins,” said Lyndhurst head coach Rob Kost about his four losses that came within the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Liberty division.

The NJIC realigned this season and the Golden Bears were moved from the Meadowlands division into the Liberty. Along with Lyndhurst, Secaucus, Queen of Peace and Harrison came from the Meadowlands to join up with Dwight Englewood, New Milford, Leonia and Ridgefield.

NJIC is now one of the tougher divisions with Harrison, Dwight Englewood, New Milford and Leonia making some stiff competition for the Bears. “We’re hoping the tough games will help us in the state playoffs,” said Kost, whose team lost to Ft. Lee, 3-0, in the state playoffs last season, but the game was scoreless at halftime.

Against the Green Knights, the Golden Bears missed on their chances while New Milford took advantage of Lyndhurst‘s mistakes. “We played real well,” said Kost as New Milford scored a goal in each half. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the net. The New Milford goalie (Zadroga) was just outstanding.”

Despite the loss, the Golden Bears are in a much better scenario than after the 0-2 start. “We’re coming together after starting out slowly,” said Kost.

Despite being shut out by the Green Knights, Lyndhurst has been scoring more this season, led by senior midfielder Erdi Memirbulaki who has five goals and three assists this season. Memirbulaki can use his entire body to score, including four headers for goals. “He’s big and aggressive,” said Kost. “He’s very dangerous and can make some big runs.”

Along with Memirbulaki, the Golden Bears have some offensive newcomers this season in freshman Andrew Cosman and sophomore Gabriel Diana. Cosman has scored three goals and one assist while Diana has chipped in four goals and three assists.
