North Arlington has been honored by the National Federation of State High School Associations after its coaches became the first in New Jersey to complete a program of online sports education courses.

The Bergen County school received “Level 1” status in the newly-introduced NFHS School Honor Roll after more than 90 percent of its coaches completed four courses through the organization’s Learning Center.

North Arlington coaches finished the core course, “Fundamentals of Coaching,” as well as three of the Learning Center’s major courses: “Concussion Sports,” “Sudden Cardiac Arrest,” and “Protecting Students from Abuse.”

“I think it’s just a big commitment by our coaches and shows that they care about the sports programs here and just want to make themselves better each day,” North Arlington athletic director Josh Aronowitz said Tuesday afternoon.

Aronowitz said 32 of the Vikings’ 35 coaches completed all courses, with the remaining three only needing to finish the “Fundamentals of Coaching.”

“When I put the initiative out there to, ‘Let’s go ahead and get this Level 1 status,’ right when the pandemic hit, everyone was on board and we did it fairly quickly,” Aronowitz said. “So I’m proud of them. They did a great job with this.”

New Jersey’s governing high school sports organization, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, trumpeted North Arlington’s accomplishment via a news release from the NFHS.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized on a national level for what we’ve always known to be true,” North Arlington principal Patrick Bott said in the release. “Our coaches are unparalleled in their professionalism, dedication and commitment to our student-athletes.”

“Mr. Aronowitz and our entire coaching staff exemplified their dedication to our student-athletes and entire school community,” said Stephen Yurchak, North Arlington superintendent of schools. “Their professional growth has helped strengthen North Arlington’s athletic program and everyone is proud of their accomplishments.”
