A trio of North Jersey’s finest did the same to win their first region titles. Clifton sophomore Jean DuBois earned revenge in the 113-pound final, Hasbrouck Heights/Wood Ridge junior Marc Mastropietro won an ultimate ride-out thriller at 120 to win Most Outstanding Wrestler, and Becton/Wallington junior Tyler Loughlin reached a milestone in his 152-pound win.

DuBois set the tone in the second match of the night, beating St. Peter’s Prep junior Michael Russo, 5-2, after losing to Russo in the 106-pound final last year, 4-1. But DuBois was more excited about getting a good seed at the state tournament Friday in Atlantic City than earning revenge.

“This was big, especially because I lost to him last year,” DuBois said. “Now I want to take this momentum down to A.C. and win a state championship.”

Mastropietro had a similar mind-set after knocking off top-seeded Robert Trombetta of Nutley, 3-2, in overtime. He held down Trombetta in the 30-second ultimate ride-out period – clinging on to his leg as the final seconds ticked down – after failing to control him for more than 15 seconds twice before that.

“I’ve been in that situation before so I knew I had to concentrate,” Mastropietro said. “I knew I had to keep his leg. I had a tight grip and I didn’t let go.”

Loughlin came into regions knowing if he won the 152-pound title, he would reach 100 wins in the final. He did that with a takedown and an escape in the first, which was enough to hold off West Essex senior Carlo Zazzara, 3-2.

“This was my ideal situation,” Loughlin said. “In front of a big crowd at regions, it was the best place to get my 100th win. It’s a big accomplishment and it gives me a big boost of confidence.”
