Wood-Ridge girls basketball coach Lou Wejnert, who amassed a 487-154 record at three different schools, has died.

Wejnert spent the bulk of his career at River Dell, where he led the Hawks to the 1997 Bergen County championship, three sectional titles and 451 wins in 20 seasons (1996-2015).

At the Oradell school, he also started the Hoops for Autism benefit tournament, inspired by his granddaughter, Leah. The event carried over to Dwight Morrow in Englewood, where Wejnert coached from 2015-17.

After a two-year retirement, he returned to the sidelines in Wood-Ridge. The Blue Devils finished 18-9 this past winter, posting their highest win total since 2015.

Wejnert is a member of the NJSIAA Coaches Hall of Fame. He lettered in three sports at Ridgefield before graduating in 1970, a year when he helped the Royals win the North 1, Group 1 baseball title.

Basketball was his main sport, and he went on to play collegiately at Pace and Jersey City State (now New Jersey City University)
