Gaels targeting league title, county run

RUTHERFORD

Experience. That is what St. Mary boys basketball will be banking on when they take to the floor next week.

The Gaels return five starters from last season’s 17-10 team and will definitely be gunning for Wood-Ridge, the lone team that was ahead of them in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands B division in the 2011-12 season.

With the realignment for 2012-13, there will just be one NJIC Meadowlands division, but for St. Mary head coach Brian Gaccione, Wood-Ridge is still in front of them.

“They are the defending champions until somebody defeats them,” said Gaccione. “We think that with the experience from last year that it will pay off in the end.”

The Gaels will get a shot at the Blue Devils for the first time on Dec. 18 at Wood-Ridge.

The five starters are Shawn Johnson, Josh Davis, Connor Cuccinelli, senior Ryan Monaghan and junior Keith Bacote.

The 2012-13 St. Mary squad will be a group of four guards, Johnson, Davis, Monaghan, along with the inside presence of Cuccinelli. “With the four guards we can spread people out and our quick guards can beat them off the dribble,” said Gaccione.

The Gaels can also shoot from the outside and beyond the three-point arc led by Davis, who drained 42 three-pointers last season.
