Nile Slater lived with pain through all his track and field activities, until there was no denying he had to have his aching left knee checked by a doctor. It just had to be more than growing pains, he figured.

“I was always complaining that the knee hurt,” the Glen Rock High School senior said recently after finishing a very healthy third in the long jump of the Bergen County indoor championships. “There was always pain, especially with the pounding from long jumps.”
