This year, some of the best tennis in Bergen County took place before the season started.
The challenge matches at Dwight-Englewood were top-caliber, fierce battles in which Bulldogs coach Joe Iwanski’s players fought for spots in the lineup.
“Whenever we had a challenge match scheduled, there’d be a different look on the kids’ faces,” Iwanski said. “There was always a lot of tension. The coaches would walk around like they had to whisper.”
When all the dust settled, Dwight-Englewood was off and running.
The Bulldogs piled up an 18-2 record, highlighted by a second straight Bergen County tournament small-schools championship.
Dwight-Englewood is The Record Boys Tennis Team of the Year.
