WAYNE — Through all the player departures and lineup changes, Bogota is back on top in Group 1 girls volleyball.

The Bucs captured the Group 1 title for the fifth time in six years, courtesy of a 25-23, 25-12 victory over upstart Leonia on Saturday at the William Paterson Rec Center.

“This is the most satisfying state title of all of them,” said Bogota coach Brad DiRupo, “because when those kids quit, I sat these kids down and said, ‘Our goal is still to win the state title.’”

Top-seeded Bogota, despite four players quitting the team this season, played markedly better than it did in last year’s loss to Secaucus in the finals. The Bucs had only eight hitting errors and one service error.

Bogota (25-3) was led by its two standouts. Junior hitter Samantha Gioiosa had 15 kills and only two hitting errors, while senior setter Amanda Manzo had 22 assists and served well. Gioiosa and sophomore libero Lisbeth Suarez had seven digs apiece.
