‘They used to say Pompton Lakes was not a basketball town … we are now to the point where Pompton Lakes is not just a football town or a wrestling town, we are now a basketball town too.’

Mike McCarthy – Pompton Lakes head boys basketball coach

POMPTON LAKES – Most of the Pompton Lakes boy’s basketball team was on hand when the Pompton Lakes Bird Cage filled the PLHS gym on February 13th as the Cardinals’ wrestling team competed for a sectional championship.

Now the Pompton Lakes boys basketball players are calling on those same fans to fill “The Cage” when they host the school’s first state tournament game in 21 years on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Park Ridge.

“We are pumped for Tuesday. This place will be rocking, we have been working all season for this,” said Pompton Lakes senior Ryan Shafer. “We expect it to be just as packed. The fans have been great all year for us.”

“It was fun being at that match. The wrestlers said that the fans gave them a lot of momentum. It will be crazy,” said fellow senior Jon Tobal.
