NEW MILFORD – Ed Marinaro got back to his Bergen County roots Friday night.

The dashing actor and football star returned to New Milford to see his No. 49 retired during halftime of the Knights’ season-opening game against Palisades Park/Leonia.

Marinaro, who graduated from New Milford High School in 1968, gave a short but touching speech to the overflowing crowd, singling out friend after friend in attendance, including his prom date from more than 40 years ago.

“She said she made that dress herself,” said Marinaro with a grin.

At the end of his address, Marinaro, wearing a blue blazer and trim tan slacks, bowed his head for just a moment and paused.

“I hope I made you proud of me,” he said to warm applause.
