BOGOTA — The game has concluded, but a posse of Bogota girls wants to keep playing.

So they commandeer one side of the volleyball court and begin bumping, setting and launching balls into the air before finally being forced to stop after 20 minutes and shuffled out into the crisp, fall night.

It’s a unique scene, but Bogota is a unique place.

Volleyball is what the girls do, and do well. The gym is festooned with purple and gold banners celebrating their volleyball championships.

“Everyone thinks that we won’t be this good because of how small of a school we are. So we come in, and we have players who play hard and play with heart and that helps us,” Bogota senior Samantha Gioiosa said. “There’s definitely a lot of pride, because our hard work does really pay off.”

The Bergen County Women Coaches Association runs county tournament events in 15 sports. Several are broken down by size, meaning the small schools take on the small schools, the large meet the large and multiple champions are crowned.
