EMERSON — Greg Kolaros was not always impressed with his form. But the results in the triple jump and long jump were far from disappointing Monday for the Park Ridge athlete at the second annual Cavo Senior Showcase at Emerson.

Kolaros won the triple jump with a personal record of 41 feet, 5 1/2 and placed third in the long jump with an 18-11 1/4. It was his best since the 41-4 that earned him eighth place in the North 1, Group 1 state sectional last spring.

“I was off on the board for the long jump – some of the jumps were too far back, some were just over and I lost distance. But form was much more of an issue last year,” Kolaros said of his performance.

The spring of 2015 saw Kolaros break out after recovering from a football injury. He was all-in on track after taking on the triple jump his freshman year.

“I kind of liked that track was all on you and that you can’t blame anyone but yourself,” explained Kolaros. “[Former coach Connie] Washnik suggested the triple jump to me. I thought it was confusing at first, but I picked up on it quickly.”

With fourteen teams in attendance, Emerson coach Mark Ledgerwood was pleased with the quality of the meet.

“We get a lot of kids out here, and it’s at a good point in the season because for a lot of kids, this is their last meet if they don’t qualify for sectionals,” Ledgerwood said. “Or, kids can work on their seed times or just use it as a tuneup meet. We like what we’ve been able to do with it.”
