POMPTON LAKES – Kristen Wernicki was just looking to make good contact. What she produced was so much more.

Rutherford’s freshman first baseman slugged a tie-breaking three-run homer in the 10th inning to power the Bulldogs past Pompton Lakes, 9-7, Tuesday in an NJIC Colonial Division softball game.

“I just was hopefully trying for a base hit; it just turned out to work a little better than that,” Wernicki said of her first varsity homer. “It was a pitch out over the middle of the plate and I was able to get a good part of the bat on it, and it just kept going. Our team really hung in there, and actually that was the biggest difference in the game.”
