WALDWICK – Losing a game late in the state tournament can knock the wind out of any team’s sails, but Waldwick High School’s baseball players are made of strong stuff.
The season was over, but knowing that Emerson was seeking an opponent to play in a ceremonial sendoff for its retiring coach, Bob Carcich, Warriors head coach Frank Clark approached his players. A regular-season game with Emerson had been rained out a while back and the opportunity was there for a makeup game, even though it would have no affect on league standings.
Ironically, it was the No. 7-seed Cavos that had jolted No. 2 Waldwick out of the North 1, Group 1 playoffs with a 6-2, quarterfinal-round upset on May 22.
