The Record

Mike Gibney scored 11 points and Gary Whritenour added 10 to lift fourth-seeded Wood-Ridge over No. 1 Cedar Grove, 50-46, in the North 1, Group 1 boys basketball semifinals Saturday night.

Gibney now has 2,200 career points, just two shy of Becton’s Tom Sienkiewicz (1977) for eighth all time in Bergen County. Whritenour increased his career total to 1,976, moving up three places to 13th all time in Bergen.

Whritenour surpassed Elmwood Park‘s Ricky Dadika (1,967 points, 1985 graduate), Austin Mallis of Fort Lee (1,969, 1995) and Saddle Brook’s Bob Jacobs (1,972, 1970).

Already the highest-scoring classmates in county history, Gibney and Whritenour have combined for 4,176 points.

Paul Rufo had a game-high 23 points for the host Panthers.

The Blue Devils play at second-seeded Waldwick on Tuesday at 7 p.m., in the sectional title game.
