CLINTON – Cooper Schumacher contributed his share. But then again, so did Andrew Gavrun, Matt DeBonte and Ethan Vogel.

The Pompton Lakes quartet combined to go 28-17 in epee as the Cardinals took a bronze medal in that category at Sunday’s boys fencing state squad championships at North Hunterdon. It was Pompton Lakes’ first top-three finish in more than 10 years.

“Today it wasn’t about the individual; it was about the team and we did a good job of supporting each other,” Schumacher said. “We definitely achieved our goal of all-around squad success, and we got vital contributions by everyone on the squad to do it.”

The state epee champion in 2011 and state runner-up last season, Schumacher went 11-4 and fellow senior and 2013 state qualifier Andrew Gavrun went 12-3. Juniors Vogel and DeBonte combined for five important victories on the “C” strip as the Cardinals finished behind first-place Montclair (33 wins) and silver medalist Watchung Hills (29).
