CRESSKILL — Hasbrouck Heights shook up the North 1, Group 1 playoff race Friday night.

The Aviators, who have lost their share of heartbreakers this season, played some outstanding defense and held on for an impressive 14-13 win over Cresskill at Arch Shaw Field. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Cougars, ranked No. 19 in The Record Top 25, keeping them from clinching the NJIC Meadowlands Division crown.

“We don’t want to give anything up too easy,” said Heights senior Mauro Altamura.

“We’re just taking them week by week right now, but this one was a dogfight.”

The Aviators (4-3), who came into the game in fifth place in the North 1, Group 1 power point standings, took a 14-13 lead with 20 seconds left in the third quarter. Altamura scored on a nine-yard run, and junior kicker Norisz Papp booted the extra point.

“Coach [Nick Delcalzo] called that play in the huddle,” Altamura said. “The line just looked at me and did a hell of a job.
