WALDWICK — Wald-wick/Midland Park simply outlasted Garfield on Friday night.

The Boilermakers, ranked No. 16 in The Record football Top 25, failed on two, two-point conversions in the fourth quarter, and the No. 11 Warriors held on for a 27-25 victory to take over sole possession of first place in the NJIC Colonial Division.

Both teams made their share of big plays on defense, but the Warriors were able to take advantage of five Garfield turnovers (two fumbles and three interceptions). The last one came in the fourth quarter with Waldwick/Midland Park nursing a 20-19 lead.

The Boilermakers tried an option play, and it appeared as if they caught the Warriors (6-0) flat-footed. But Ricky Reyes’ pass hung up just long enough for Ron Kruis to step in for an interception.
