There are times when the Emerson girls soccer team can do nothing else but laugh.

A small Group 1 school to begin with, the team had 16 players in the entire program this preseason, which has been trimmed to 13 after three early-season injuries, including one to expected starting goalie Katie Falotico.

“Sometimes we’ll be warming up and turn around and look at our team and be like, ‘Where is everyone?’ ” Cavos junior Devin Riker said. “But this is it. This is all of us. This is our team.”

That team, though, keeps disregarding the numbers. Although they can find humor in the situation, the players also have shown they can win.

Emerson, on the verge of entering The Record girls soccer Top 25, is off to a 6-2 start and on a five-game winning streak.
