John Iurato was rushing to get ready to attend his cousin’s Sweet 16 party Saturday night. It was good timing, too, because he was in a celebrating mood.Just hours earlier, the Hasbrouck Heights sophomore wrestler completed his riveting run in Region 4 at West Orange.

He started off as the ninth seed, but ended up as the 120-pound champ by beating North Bergen’s Devin Garrido, 11-2, in the final. He also upset Caldwell’s two-time state place-winner Dean Caravela in the quarterfinals, and fourth seed Ray Wetzel of Queen of Peace in the semifinals.

The Record Male Athlete of the Week tried to put his feelings into words.

“I’ve never had so much energy,” said Iurato, who earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award. “I’ve never felt so alive. It still hasn’t hit me yet. I’m not sure when it will.”
