For Sam Schneider, this is the big payoff for all of his off-season work.

The Emerson/Park Ridge junior pushed himself through grueling workouts and battled tough competition, all in the hopes that he would be prepared for this stretch of the wrestling season.

The Record Male Athlete of the Week captured the District 8 title Saturday, beating Demarest’s Anthony Rubinetti in the 120-pound final. He shrugged off a bloodied left cheek to not only avenge an early-season loss to Rubinetti, but earn the Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

So with his third district title behind him and the Region 2 tournament looming this weekend, Schneider’s thoughts are turning toward all of his preseason back-breaking preparation
