Hawthorne Christian High School rebounded after its loss in the Passaic County Tournament with a 3-1 win at Saddle River Day on Oct. 15 in a North Jersey Interscholastic Contest (NJIC) Patriot Division boys soccer contest. Defender Will Woodfin followed up a big game in the county contest with a pair of goals against Saddle River Day. Rene White added another goal for Hawthorne Christian. John Williams made a pair of saves to get the win for the Defenders while in goal. In another game, in a battle of two of the better teams in the Patriot Division, Hawthorne Christian could not get the winner in two overtimes and ended up with a 1-all tie at Park Ridge. Woodfin had the lone Hawthorne Christian goal and Defenders goal keeper Williams made eight saves. In a battle of Gazette-area schools, the Hawthorne boys squad nipped Eastern Christian, 2-1, at home that was also a contest in the NJIC Colonial Division. As it turned out Bears top striker Brandon Cruz’s second goal of the game that came in the second half was the difference. Sam Veenstra scored the lone Eagles goal that came in the second half. Cruz put Hawthorne ahead 1-0 with a goal in the first half. The duo of Hawthorne goal keepers Frankie Giglio and Julio Aybar preserved the win. Hawthorne finished the week off on a high note with a 3-1 victory at Lodi in the NJIC Colonial Division contest. As of the end of last week, Hawthorne was 10-4 on the season.
