LYNDHURST – It’s been too long to remember the last time that the Lyndhurst boys soccer team had jumped out to as good a start as has happened so far in 2015.

The Golden Bears were 7-1-1 as of last week and were considered the biggest threat to powerhouse Harrison in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Liberty Division.

Lyndhurst lost 4-0 the first time around against Harrison and faced the Blue Tide again this time on the road on Tuesday under the lights at 7 p.m.

With the revival of the program, Lyndhurst already has received some accolades as it garnered a Bergen County Tournament bid. It will be a tough hill to climb though as the Golden Bears travel to Cliffside Park on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. The Red Raiders are a soccer powerhouse and have Bergen County titles in their resume.

Lyndhurst has had great success in the Bergen County Tournament, but you have to go a couple decades to find that.

In his second season as head coach, Denis Jelcic has been feeling team chemistry with the 2015 version of the Bears.

“I am just happy where we are as a program, and that our future is bright,” said Jelcic about being asked when the last time the Lyndhurst boys soccer program had gotten out to this kind of start. “This year’s team should make everyone in Lyndhurst proud and come support them. There are always younger players that are making great strides to compete on this roster. It is a lot of fun to be around so many players who are working hard day in and day out to make this team.”

No matter the outcome Jelcic said garnering a bid will only help the kids and the program.

“This team has worked so hard and has set their goals very high,” said Jelcic. “They are excited to be in the position they are in right now, with a county tournament berth, a possible state tournament berth and doing well in the league standings. They are a very excited group right now; the county tournament berth will be a confidence boost they need to get them to the next level.”
