WOOD-RIDGE – Thomas Fischkelta became a trivia answer in Wood-Ridge on Friday and Ariel Silva became a hero as the Blue Devils downed NJIC Meadowlands Division rival Weehawken, 3-2, to win their debut as a boys varsity soccer program.

Fischkelta scored the first goal in program history with just one minute remaining in the first half to send the game into halftime tied at 1. Silva’s first goal off a set piece gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead early in the second. But Weehawken came right back moments later to tie the game at 2.

The game-winner came with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation as Silva buried his second of the game. Senior defender Adrian Lopez also had a strong game in the back for the Blue Devils.

“It was so exciting,” said coach Alberico De Pierro. “It was a great way to get our first victory in program history.”

WALLINGTON 3, SADDLE BROOK 1 (at Saddle Brook): Returning 30-goal scorer Damian Agaj picked up right where he left off last season, scoring two goals for the Panthers. Nick Banko got the other goal for the defending division champions.

NJIC PATRIOT DIVISION

Waldwick 3, Hawthorne Christian 1 (at Waldwick):  The defending champion Warriors drew first blood in the battle for the division title with a 3-1 victory over the rival Defenders in the season and division opener for both teams. James Noyer had a part in all three scores with two goals and one assist, and Chris Cameron added two assists for the Warriors.

NJIC COLONIAL DIVISION

Pompton Lakes 3, Glen Rock 1 (at Pompton Lakes): The Cardinals spread the scoring around as Miguel Almazan, Atid Malka and Chase Goodwin each found the back of the net against the division rival Panthers.
