NJIC CHAMPIONSHIPS, JAN. 8: The highlight of the week is the sixth annual NJIC Championships at the Armory at 5 p.m. Hawthorne edged Glen Rock 62-59 for the boys title last year and Hasbrouck Heights edged the Panthers 61-58 for the girls title last year. Glen Rock looks for revenge this year in both meets, but Rutherford, Hawthorne and Hasbrouck Heights should also be competitive in both meets.

There are champions in six boys and six girls events returning. Ajay Gonzalez of Manchester (55 hurdles), Adam Khriss (400), Dan Sullivan of Rutherford (800 and 1,600), Andrew Laguttuta of Glen Rock (3,200) and Jared Forer of Glen Rock (pole vault) are the boys returning champs.

For the girls, Katie Hefty of Eastern Christian (55), Megan Gasnick of Park Ridge (400), Nicole Bertollo of Hawthorne (800), Alex Walter of Glen Rock (1,600 and 3,200) and Monika Lucic of Hasbrouck Heights (triple jump) are the returnees.

It’s also the indoor league debut of national leader and Bergen County high jump record holder Jenna Rogers of Rutherford, who is also expected to long jump and hurdle. Also look for Dwight-Englewood’s Jeremy Bronstein to make his indoor debut in the 800 and 1,600. Bronstein had a terrific junior cross-country season.
