RUTHERFORD – Rutherford baseball head coach Carmen Spina has seen its Toms River dreams fall at the hands of Bernards the last few years.

With that in mind, Spina has bolstered his independent schedule starting this week with contests outside of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference with games against Westwood and Marist on Thursday and Saturday on the road.

With the tougher schedule the team’s record might not be as good as last year’s 16-9 mark, but the team will still be better in the county and state tournaments. And last season, it was Bernards that ended Rutherford’s season, this time in the Group 2 North 2 sectional semi-finals.

He added that the team has the usual three goals again this season – win a league title while making a run in the county and state tournaments.

Spina said that it will take all the aspects in their game to make a run to Toms River and the Group 2 state title game.
