RAMSEY – It came down to the last shot.

Waldwick advanced to the Bergen County semifinals with a 4-3 win in penalty kicks after 100 scoreless minutes on Sunday night against Ridgewood. Warrior goalie Lucas Mainenti was mobbed by teammates on the field at Ramsey High School after the Maroons’ final kick sailed over the posts. Waldwick faces Ramsey in next Saturday’s semifinal, and represents the only Group 1 school left in the tournament.

“I had so many coaches texting me and emailing me to do it for the Group 1s and do it for the NJIC,” coach Jonathan Noschese said. “We took that to heart. That’s a really good team in Ridgewood. We just did what we had to do. We had a good gameplan coming in and it was one of those things where everything goes right. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys.”

The Warriors led 1-0 after the first round of kicks when Garrett Mironenko buried his shot. James Huber, Chris Borgese and John McHugh all converted in the following rounds for Waldwick. Then a Warrior shooter misfired on the fifth round, opening the door for a Ridgewood comeback. But the final Maroon attempt was too high, setting off a wild scene on the field for Waldwick and dozens of fans.

Noschese said the Warriors work on penalty kicks at every practice leading up to tournament games. He wrote down eight names on a small slip of white paper with “PKs” scribbled on one side. Six players requested to be selected, one of whom was hurt.

“It’s like the Oscars,” Noschese said. “If it has to go to PKs, I have names written down and then I say, who wants to come up? And five guys just came up and wanted it. I never make a kid take it if he doesn’t want to.”

The unseeded Warriors (14-1) started the postseason with a 4-1 win over Fort Lee and also scored a 2-0 upset over defending-champion Ramapo.

Waldwick stands as the only Group 1 program to ever win the Bergen County tournament. Its lone championship came back in 1995, coincidentally over the Maroons.

Glen Rock (13-0) upsets No. 1 NV/Old Tappan (9-1) with 4-1 win

Glen Rock took down the top seed with four straight goals, earning a second straight trip to the Final Four.

The Panthers built an early lead with an opportunistic shot by Ryan McCarthy at 26′ and header by Ben Zakowski at 29′. The NJIC team extended the lead after intermission with goals by John Corry and Mark Buckel.
