Secaucus HS

Secaucus girls basketball coach John Sterling, always humble and honest, has been referring to this season as a transition year for his Patriots.

In theory, that’s true. The Patriots, after all, did graduate two of the premier players in North Jersey and have a roster crammed with underclassmen.

But if this is a transition, it’s one of the smoothest on record.

The Patriots entered this week at 19-5 and have jumped up to the No. 13 slot in The Record girls basketball Top 25. They are in the semifinals of the Hudson County tournament for the sixth straight season, where they will face No. 1 Bayonne on Wednesday night at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City.

“That is a tribute to these girls and all their hard work,” Sterling said.

Bayonne will provide a big challenge for the Patriots, who don’t have the size to tangle with the Bees around the basket. These Patriots are built around quick, sharpshooting guards.
