RUTHERFORD – St. Mary was looking to put a stamp on its regular season with a victory over Becton on Thursday and claim at least a share of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands Division title.
The Lady Gaels were tied with Hasbrouck Heights for the division lead with their final regular season division game against Becton.
For the Becton girls hoops team, it was Senior Night and the Lady Wildcats would not have any part of St. Mary coming over the tracks and clinching it on their court.
Becton would stun St. Mary, 39-37, with an incredible fourth quarter where the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Gaels, 17-6.
Sam Stallone and Steph Mitarotonda led the way with 17 and 10 points, respectively, in the victory for Becton.
On the other side, St. Mary’s top scorer Samantha Tello led the Lady Gaels with 13 points, including a pair of three-point buckets.
Despite the loss, St. Mary was helped out by Weehawken. The Lady Indians defeated Hasbrouck Heights, 47-36, on the same night, resulting in both the Gaels and Aviators sharing the Meadowlands title.
