HALEDON – The prevailing feeling within North Jersey boys basketball circles was that Manchester had little chance of repeating as North 1, Group 2 champion without suspended senior forward Alex Morales.
The Falcons are one win away from proving virtually everyone outside their locker room wrong. Third-seeded Manchester (19-7) has won three postseason games without its leading scorer and rebounder to advance to the sectional final tonight at top-seeded Ramsey (25-3), the same team the Falcons beat on the road to win a sectional title last season.
“It’s a big surprise,” Manchester coach Rich Sponzilli said, “because nobody thought we would get this far without him.”
Senior guard Terrell Griffin and sophomore guard Jerrell Wright have assumed more responsibility offensively since Morales was suspended late last month by the Haledon school from playing basketball for the remainder of the season.
