The Lyndhurst High School athletic department has spiced up the spring season as the host for the first South Bergen versus Essex County Showdown baseball tournament on Saturday with the headline emblazoned: “Bragging Rights are on the line.”
Lyndhurst, Rutherford and St. Mary baseball teams will compete against a contingent of Essex County high schools in Cedar Grove, Bloomfield and Verona. All three games will be held at the Lyndhurst Recreation Center with Rutherford taking on Cedar Grove in the first game of the Showdown.
All three South Bergen teams have had significant success over the last couple of decades that has included a few state titles.
The Showdown was the brain child of Lyndhurst Athletic Director Jeff Radigan and head baseball coach Pat Auteri.
“The reason was to showcase some great local baseball teams and see who had the better baseball, South Bergen or Essex,” said Radigan.
The Rutherford game starts it off at Noon with Lyndhurst taking on Verona at 3 p.m. and St. Mary facing Bloomfield at 6 p.m.
